The bed bug mattress protector has a pore size of less than two microns (2µm), meaning you can be confident that it stops dust mites, bed bugs, liquid spills, scabies, pet dander and other allergens from entering or escaping from your mattress or ensemble base.

The bed bug mattress cover and encasement also kills all dust mites, bed bugs and their eggs trapped inside this encasement by cutting off access to their food source and stopping allergens from becoming airborne and entering your respiratory system. An additional feature of the encasement is its ability to protect your mattress from wear, tear and stains.

Description of Our Anti-Bed Bug Mattress Protector

1. Genuine Bed Bug covers use 90gsm polyester knitted jersey fabric (outer) with a 0.2mm TPU waterproof lining. The micro-porous TPU lining is essential for the product to be effective, resulting in a hypoallergenic surface that is soft, waterproof and cool.

2. Once installed, the cover is designed to be used in conjunction with a standard mattress protector that can be washed weekly to avoid unsealing your mattress. We recommend using our Mattress Mate™ quilted mattress protector which has been designed specifically for this task with the same fine pore size fabrics. You can find this product on our home page.

It means the encasement has a microporous TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) lining that blocks liquids (so it resists spills, incontinence) while having pores small enough (less than ~2 µm) to block dust mites, allergens, bed bug, mites scabies, mould and more from entering or exiting your mattress.
These items should be washed before use. When used with a slip-on Mattress Mate™ protector over it, this encasement only needs washing or steaming every 3–6 months. Otherwise, wash more frequently if the cover is directly exposed and no Mattress Mate is used. Use gentle cycles, avoid bleach, and avoid hot settings more than 60deg.
- Cotton Encasements: Made from tightly woven 100% cotton (approx. 2.8 µm pore size). They’re breathable, natural, OEKO-TEX certified, hypoallergenic, and chemical-free. Cotton is ideal if you prefer natural fibres, maximum airflow, and comfort. It’s not waterproof, so best when liquid protection is not a concern.
- Polyester Jersey Waterproof Encasements (90 gsm): These use a knitted polyester jersey with a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) waterproof membrane. They block liquids, stains, bed bugs, dust mites, and allergens, dirt and grime (just about everything). They’re slightly less breathable than cotton, but softer and stretchier, making them easier to fit your mattresses.
Summary:Choose cotton if you want natural fibres and breathability.Choose polyester waterproof if you need spill and liquid protection.
If you are sensitive to volatile organic compounds this product will be suitable for you. We suggest that you wash your product twice prior to use as this will ensure the fabric is free from any contaminants that may have transferred in production of from the product packaging. We have had plenty of highly sensitive customers who have had no issues with our Polyester/TPU lined items once they have been washed. The fabric is inert and does not off gas.

Installation Instructions

Step 1

Stand mattress or bed base upright. Lean against the wall if required.

Step 2

Slide the encasement over from the top.

Step 3

Zip the encasement up halfway.

Step 4

Place the mattress back on bed and completely close zipper. If used on a bed base make small incisions for the legs or wheels and firmly screw back in.

Ensemble Base Or Box Spring Use

The mattress encasement is also suitable for use with an ensemble base or box spring:

1. Remove the legs or wheels.
2. Slide the encasement over the base and zip it up.
3. Use a sharp knife or scissors to make a small incision where the first leg hole is located.
4. Put the screw/bolt from the leg or wheel through the incision in the encasement and tighten it firmly, sealing the encasement to the base between the leg and the baseboard.
5. Repeat this process for each leg or wheel.

It is always best to follow the instructions carefully for the optimal functioning of your base, protector or cover.

Enclosed Binding Seams:

An enclosed binding seam is a seam construction method in which the fabric edges are fully sealed within a binding, forming a continuous and impenetrable barrier along the seam line. This technique is critical in mattress, pillow, and quilt encasements intended for allergen, bed bug, and scabies control. Unlike standard seams, enclosed binding seams maintain the barrier properties of the encasement fabric, preventing the passage of microscopic allergens such as dust mite waste, while also eliminating potential entry or escape points for bed bugs and mites.

Their effectiveness can be validated through standardized testing methods, such as ASTM F3160 for barrier performance against bed bug penetration and allergen filtration tests like ASTM F2100. By ensuring the seam integrity meets or exceeds these benchmarks, enclosed binding seams provide a reliable containment system, preserving the protective function of the encasement in both residential and healthcare environments.
